Solar PV panels for electricity
MEEL GROUP - SUSTAINABILITY SOLUTIONS: SOLAR PV PANELS
Hit your carbon reduction targets and decrease energy bills.
Our team can lead you through the solar panel options, allowing you to become more independent from the National Grid, reduce your building's impact on the environment, and give you substantial savings on your energy bills.
Solar electricity can help power your business. In addition, it will significantly improve your supply chain sustainability credentials and reduce your carbon footprint. We are assisting many companies across Cheshire and the northwest region to generate and store their electricity onsite by installing solar PV panels.
Solar electricity for your building
The solar panels are either installed on your roof or on the ground near your property; they are made up of many photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into green electricity. This electricity is passed through an inverter, converting it from DC to standard AC power.
Additional option of battery storage
A number of solar batteries can be added to your system, allowing electricity to be stored for use in the evening and nighttime. The addition of batteries really improves the efficiency of the system.
Sell surplus power back to the grid
While surplus electricity generated can be sold back to the National Grid via your energy supplier, the aim of an efficient system is to allow you to use as much solar-generated electricity as possible. Our engineers are experts in creating a balanced and efficient solar PV system.
Do they
work on dull days?
While sunny days produce the most electricity, modern solar panels work reasonably well in cloudy weather. Even though the visible light on dull days isn't as strong, the panels continue to work using wavelengths of light that pass through clouds.
Solar PV panels are made up of small photovoltaic cells. These cells vibrate when touched by sunlight. This is known as the photovoltaic effect. The vibration generates green DC electricity. An inverter is used to change the DC electricity into AC electricity suitable for standard use.
A solar PV system will have the following;
• PV solar panels made up of photovoltaic cells.
• An inverter in your loft space that converts the green energy from DC to AC electricity – suitable for home use.
• A consumer unit to show how much electricity your solar panels are generating.
• Access to the National Grid for days when insufficient solar electricity is generated. Excess solar electricity may be sold back to the National Grid or stored in solar batteries for use after sunset or in periods of high demand.
Ask our solar experts
Yes, your solar panels will work in all weather as they rely on radiation from the sun rather than temperature. Solar panels in a hot, sunny climate will naturally gather more energy, but even on a cloudy day, your solar panel will be gathering energy. Naturally, solar panels are less productive in winter as the days are shorter and the sun is lower in the sky.
The UK has a Net Zero-Carbon target of 2050, and this includes businesses. However, many companies have set earlier targets to ensure they are prepared.
Solar PV panels to generate electricity onsite are an easy and trusted ‘building block’ to an active sustainability policy, allowing you to reduce your company’s carbon footprint by many tonnes each year.
Solar panels also give you control over your energy bills; generating and storing your own electricity significantly reduces your bills and removes dependency on the national grid.
Solar panels generally last for 25 – 30 years. They still function after this point but are less effective. Progress in renewable energy is moving forward quickly, and the latest solar panel models are expected to last between 40 – 50 years.
Using solar panels to create free electricity positively impacts the planet. Light from the sun is converted via photovoltaic cells (PV) in the solar panel into direct electric current (DC). DC is changed into AC for use by standard sockets. There are zero carbon emissions produced in this process.
Sunlight is free, and once you have paid for your solar panel system & installation, you will see a reduction in electricity bills.
A small commercial business, for example, using 12,500KwH per year, can comfortably generate 60% of its annual electricity. At current 2022 energy prices, the return on investment is only 9.8 years. It also reduces their carbon footprint by 2.08 tonnes per annum.
Meel Group – Sustainability Solutions can lead you through the solar panel options, reducing your building’s impact on the environment and giving you substantial savings on your energy bills.
Are solar panels suitable for my business?
Solar energy can prove very beneficial for all businesses, whether large or small, as energy prices continue to rise. Many commercial buildings have large roof areas with plenty of space for rows of solar panels. So why not make your business roof space work for you? The installation of solar panels will reduce your carbon footprint, save money and provide a secure future energy supply. In addition, PV solar panels require very little maintenance and, with no moving parts, minimal maintenance and repair.
Solar panels are most effective during the brightest hours of the day. This is ideal for all businesses that work from 9 to 5; however, for premises in use 24 hours of the day, solar batteries can be installed to store your green energy for use during the evening and to power night security lighting.
Financial gains
For any business, the cost of energy can have a tangible impact on overall profit. If this is you, solar panels to generate electricity could be a solution to consider. The initial outlay may look a little expensive, but the mid to long term benefits will certainly outweigh the solar panel cost. By producing your own green, solar energy, the reduction in your energy bill will be almost instant. In May 2022, businesses pay an average of 17.5p per kWh for electricity, and this figure is rapidly increasing in the UK.
Combining modern battery storage with solar PV panels allows you to use solar electricity generated during the day in the evening. Please get in touch if you would like us to assess how solar electricity could be integrated into your business.
